Who inspired the transformation into a Sports Car Submarine? Bond, James Bond. The concept and design are inspired by the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me. In the film, James Bond drove his Lotus underwater like a submarine. But it was only an animation.

 

Could a Sports Car Submarine really be possible? Or only in the movies? Well, the first thing you’ll notice as you drive your Lotus into the water is – it floats. But then you crack the door and the water starts flowing in.

 

Like many great sports cars; this Lotus is a convertible. So how will you breathe underwater?

 

Well, the submarine isn’t an air-tight capsule like a giant military submarine. Instead, it has two built-in scuba tanks and diving regulators to allow two people to remain underwater for up to an hour. You’re sinking to the bottom, but that’s okay because you can breathe with your scuba gear. Now, you can’t just sit there. It’s time to drive.

 

Your Sports Car Submarine runs on a 54kW 160NM electric motor which is powered by six 48-volt Lithium-ion batteries. It has a top speed of over 120 km/h and accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.1 seconds. Beyond generating some serious sea-horse power, the electric engine means there are zero-emissions.

 

Yet getting a car to run underwater isn’t the real problem. The military has developed cars that become ‘submarines’. But the problem with those military vehicles is they aren’t real submarines. All they can do is slowly drive over the ocean floor. They can sink and drive, but they can’t swim.

 

This Sports Car Submarine is revolutionary because it can swim around like a fish to a depth of 10 metres. It has propellers at the rear to provide propulsion and jets at the front to provide steering and lift. It’s a real submarine. What’s more, the onboard laser-guided sensor allows it to cruise along autonomously, like a shark.

 

While it seems straight out of a James Bond film, this vehicle really does drive just as well underwater as it does across land. It has a top speed of over 120 km/h, an acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds, and reaches a depth of 10 metres underwater.

 

The Sports Car Submarine is the first vehicle that is truly both a sports car and a submarine.
